🏢 The Birth of NCR Paper
NCR paper was first introduced in 1953 by the National Cash Register Company (now known as NCR Corporation). The goal? To streamline transactions, receipts, and forms without using traditional carbon paper, which was inconvenient and easily smudged.
Scientists Barry Green and Lowell Schleicher at NCR Laboratories developed the microencapsulation technology that made carbonless copying possible. When pressure was applied with a pen, microscopic capsules would burst, releasing dye that would transfer to the paper underneath — all without a separate carbon insert.

🧪 How It Works
Each sheet of NCR paper is coated:
- The back of the top sheet (CB) with micro-encapsulated dye.
- The front of the next sheet (CF) with a clay or reactive resin.
- In multi-part forms, intermediate sheets (CFB) are coated on both sides.
When pressure is applied, the dye reacts with the clay/resin to create a permanent mark - a clean and instant duplicate or triplicate.
